Morgan urges Cardiff Blues not to underestimate rivals

4th May 2017

Matthew Morgan has warned Cardiff Blues not to underestimate Newport Gwent Dragons in the final Guinness PRO12 clash of the season.

The Blues are targeting a second consecutive double over their East Wales rivals, having triumphed 27-16 at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park earlier in the season.

But Morgan reckons the Men of Gwent have improved in recent weeks and insists his side can take nothing for granted in the heat of a Welsh derby.

He said: “They are a very physical side, they have got better over the last couple of weeks and are playing a bit of rugby.

“When you watch them they chuck the ball about and play more rugby compared to Christmas time.

“But we’re focussing on ourselves and what we have been good at throughout the season, and hopefully the forwards can give the backs a platform so we can go out and play rugby.”

Wales’ Capital Region go into the encounter on the back of consecutive wins over the Ospreys and Zebre. The Blues fired on all cylinders against their Swansea-based rivals but were frustrated by Zebre last week.

And Morgan knows his team must perform for 80-minutes to secure a victory at Constructaquote Stadium.

He added: “Against the Ospreys it was a great 80-minute performance and then against Zebre it was a good first half and second-half wasn’t so great. It’s just about putting all of that together on Saturday.”

“I played there (Caerphilly) in a trial game at under-11s! I suppose it will be a bit like playing in some of the English Championship grounds but I’m looking forward to it.”
