Matthew Morgan has today announced his retirement from rugby due to injury.
The elusive full-back underwent knee surgery earlier in the year but has been unable to recover to resume training.
The 31-year-old full-back will now hang up his boots after making 122 appearances for the Blue and Blacks and take his first steps into coaching with Cardiff and Vale College and Porth Harlequins.
In an emotional statement, Morgan said:” It is with great sadness that I announce my retirement from professional rugby following an on going knee injury.
“Over my career rugby has influenced my life in so many ways it has made me grow to the person I am today. I have met some of the most amazing people from coaches, players, medical teams, backroom staff, chefs, kit men who have all played a huge role in my career and day to day life.
“I am truly thankful and grateful I’ve had this opportunity and thank every club I’ve been lucky enough to play for. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the consistent fans for the on going support and commitment.
“Also huge thank you to my wife, parents, family and friends for being there through the highs and lows. Rugby will always have a huge place in my heart and I wish the boys all the very best for their future.
“I will miss being a part of Cardiff Rugby team but look forward to the next part of my journey and will always stay involved with rugby.”
The five cap Wales international came through the ranks at the Ospreys and joined Cardiff from Bristol in 2016.
He quickly became a key member of his squad thanks to his electric counter-attacking ability and was part of the side that lifted the European Challenge Cup in 2018.
Cardiff Rugby head coach Matt Sherratt has worked with Morgan during his two stints at the club, and also at Bristol, and has paid tribute to the Brynteg School graduate.
Sherratt said: “I’ve been fortunate enough to coach Matthew three times. Firstly in 2014, at Bristol, then in my two spells at cardiff.
“He’s been an absolute pleasure to know and work with. He was a rare talent who could get crowds off their feet in excitement and behind that he was a great professional who worked really hard at his game.
“More than that he’s a great person and we wish him and his young family every success in the next chapter. He’ll always be welcomed back at the Arms Park.”
