17th August 2018

Cardiff Blues will kick-off their return to the Heineken Champions Cup with a trip to face Lyon at Matmut Stadium de Gerland on Sunday, October 14 (2pm).

Following a five-year absence, the European Challenge Cup champions, return to the top tier determined to build on the success of last season.

They faced Lyon twice during their triumphant Challenge Cup campaign and completed a memorable double.

After their trip to France, the Blues host Glasgow Warriors at the Arms Park on Sunday, October 21 (3.15pm). John Mulvihill’s men then face Saracens in the December double header.

Mulvihill said: “It is great to be back in the Heineken Champions Cup and it is important that we give a really good account of ourselves.

“It's a big challenge, but a huge opportunity for all of us individually and collectively as a team. Our preparation into each challenge will be specific as we aim to be a real force in the competition.

“Facing some of the best teams in Europe is a huge motivation. Saracens have been one of the leading clubs, Glasgow topped their PRO14 conference and Lyon finished in the Top 14 top five.

“The opening fixture over in Lyon will be a great occasion and a significant challenge but the boys have experience of going there and achieving. The Christmas double header against Saracens also stands out.

“I have heard so much about the passionate Arms Park crowd and cannot wait to experience the buzz of a big European encounter in the Welsh capital.”
