Alun Lawrence believes confidence is growing within the squad, as the team prepares to kick off an exciting European campaign following a strong start to the season.
The in-form number eight captains the Blue & Blacks for the trip to Stade Francais following an impressive start to the season both individually and collectively.
The team currently sit second in the URC table, with five wins from the first six rounds, adding further confidence to the squad’s early-season momentum. Much of that has been built upon dependable Lawrence, who tops the charts for carries and tackles.
“Personally and as a squad, it’s a really good feeling around here. We’ve got off to a pretty decent start, to say the least, and I’m enjoying my rugby. It’s exactly what I want to be doing.”
The back-rower has been an ever presence after featuring regularly so far this season, and is determined to continue pushing his case for selection with the start of the EPCR Challenge Cup this weekend followed by a succession of Welsh derbies.
“For me, it’s about putting my hand up every single time. What I contribute is what I pride myself on. Being involved in that matchday 23 is what every player aspires to. I’m lucky to be getting those opportunities, and I’ll do my best to keep that spot.”

Cardiff rounded off a successful return to action after the international break with a valuable bonus-point victory away to Zebre. Which was a result Lawrence believes should not be underestimated.
“We can’t overlook how big that win was. Good teams have gone there and lost. To get the victory and the bonus point is huge for us and helps us carry momentum into Europe.”
Cardiff now turn their attention to a highly anticipated European schedule, beginning with a trip to Paris to face Stade Français.
“There are some really exciting match-ups in our group, starting this weekend in Stade. It doesn’t get much better than playing in Paris. You get the French flag waving, the drums going, the chants starting… it’s a brilliant atmosphere.
“Cup runs and European competitions are where some of the big career highlights come. Cardiff has a lot of history in Europe. Especially as the last time the final was in Bilbao, we were there, and we won it. That’s an exciting prospect for us.
“You’re playing teams you don’t see week in, week out in the league. New places, new atmospheres-everything builds into a really exciting competition. Hopefully we can make a good account of ourselves and go far.”
Cardiff begin their European campaign this weekend in Paris, before returning to the Cardiff Arms Park to face Ulster Rugby on the 13th December (8pm KO). Tickets for this game are available now by clicking below or calling 029 20 302030.
