Lane insists derbies are all about the wins

26th December 2017

Derby matches are all about the wins, according to Owen Lane, after his side picked up a crucial 17-22 victory over Dragons on Boxing Day.

The wing has been in fine form since his Guinness PRO14 debut against Connacht, and was awarded man-of-the-match at Rodney Parade, having set up Aled Summerhill for the afternoon’s opening try.

Lane believes his side’s passion in defence played a key part in the win and was delighted to seal the win, despite late pressure from Bernard Jackman’s side.

“During the week, going into the game, all we spoke about was getting the win,” said Lane.

“Danny loves these derby matches, they are really big games for us and we knew how important it is to get the wins. We’re all really happy.

“At the end, with only five points in it, you can’t help but make sure you’re not the one to let them through.

“We showed plenty of passion in our defence today and the boys put a real good shift in.”

The Dragons clash was Lane’s first experience of a Welsh derby in the Guinness PRO14, and the wing is hungry for more, starting with New Year’s Eve home match against defending champions, Scarlets.

Lane said: “I really enjoyed the experience. There was a big crowd here at Rodney Parade and it was a bit daunting at times.

“I’m really looking forward to the game against Scarlets at Cardiff Arms Park on New Year’s Eve.

“Hopefully I’ll be involved again with another packed house and we can get another big win.”
