Josh Adams Reflects on Wales’ Defeat to Argentina and Looks Ahead to Japan Test

Josh Adams insists there were “plenty of positives to hold on to” despite a record defeat to Argentina on the weekend, as Steve Tandy’s new-look squad continues to take shape.

Los Pumas ran in seven tries in total as they dominated with a ruthless performance at the Principality Stadium

There were however, plenty of encouraging signs for Wales but indiscipline and mistakes proved costly against a well-drilled Pumas side.

“Obviously we’re disappointed. You can’t play for that long with boys in the bin against a quality team,” Adams said after the game. “But we’ve already chatted about it as a group. There was a lot of good in there too, and we showed clear signs of where we want to take things.

“Our attack was pleasing. When we got into their 22, we looked dynamic and physical. There were patches where we managed the game well and made good decisions on the field. That’s something we’ve been focusing on.

“You could see what we’re trying to do with the ball. Maybe we overplayed at times, but that’s part of building balance with a new set-up. Today felt like a baseline, a foundation. We’ll only get better.”

Attention now turns to next weekend’s Test against Japan, a fixture that carries extra weight with world rankings and the upcoming World Cup draw in play.

Wales lost to Japan in the summer but ended their record losing run with victory in the second Test, with Saturday the third two the two sides have faced each other in six months.

“We haven’t spoken about it much yet because the game is still raw, but as a squad we know next week is important,” Adams said. “Japan are just around us in the rankings, so of course it adds something to the match. We played them in the summer and know what to expect.”

Despite the frustrations of the afternoon, Adams’ message remained clear: Wales are at the start of something, not the end.

“We’re excited. There was loads of good in our performance, and we’ll keep moving forward.”
