John thrilled as mighty Quins stunned

31st January 2014

Coach Paul John was delighted as Cardiff Blues produced an impressive display of attacking rugby to stun reigning LV=Cup champions Harlequins 35-5 at the Arms Park.

The English Premiership side adopted a free-flowing game in the first half, but tries from Filo Paulo and Gavin Evans gave the hard-working hosts the lead.

A brilliant second half from Blues saw them turn on the style and tries from man-of-the-match Dan Fish, Tom Williams and Marc Breeze saw the home side wrap up a try bonus point win.

“It was a pleasing result and a good team performance. We said the LV=Cup period was about getting momentum and we got that today,” said John.

“We said at half-time that we had the ball 21 times and gave it away 18. We struggled to get a foothold in the game and how we were 14-5 up going into the break I am not totally sure. We took our chances.

“We were giving the ball away and there was a high penalty count. But, to be fair, second half we kept the ball better and played territory better.

“Last week against Bath there was a lot of good things and we caused them problems. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough composure in their 22 on that day.

“To score five tries today was really pleasing and it gives us a big lift before next weekend when we are back in the RaboDirect PRO12. It was nice to get a win for everyone.”
