‘Job done’ after bonus point win – Sherratt

Head coach Matt Sherratt said it was a ‘job done’ after his side earned a bonus point win in the BKT United Rugby Championship over rivals Dragons RFC at the Arms Park.

Cardiff ran in four tries, which gave them their 19th consecutive league win over the men from Gwent.

However, Sherratt admitted he was more focused on the result rather than the performance, after a gap playing during the international break, and fearing a potential new head coach bounce for the Dragons.

“It’s job done,” said Sherratt. “After five weeks off and ten boys in the Welsh squad and Dragons coming here full of motivation with a new head coach, it was a banana skin we were pretty worried about.

“It’s always difficult after the autumn period, four weeks without a game, as I said we had 10 boys training with Wales, who came back in so just getting cohesion.

“Then you add to that the Dragons coming with a new head coach. They are always an emotional side, very competitive and we knew it would give them another 10 per cent.

“We aren’t starting games well. It’s a little bit around set-piece and some discipline issues which mean we aren’t getting our game on the field enough. It’s probably taking us 10 minutes to show what we’re about.

“That sends the crowd into a little bit of a lull so we have to be able to start better and put our game on the opposition because in the last three or four home games that hasn’t happened.

“I think it’s one of those games where you take the five points and move on into Europe.”

Sherratt singled out the performance of young full back Cam Winnett who was named player of the match.

“A special mention to Cam Winnett, he played 21 games last season, every game on the summer tour, every game start of this block, so six games on the bounce,” added Sherratt.

“He then went away with Wales and got man of the match tonight. I think he’s somebody who makes a massive difference to us a Club.

“I’m really pleased with him, but all the boys showed a lot of effort, not that much quality maybe if I’m honest, but we’ll certainly take the five points.”
