Harri Millard: “We’ve Come Out a Better Team”

Harri Millard insists the hard work put in during Cardiff Rugby’s recent spell without a game has left the squad well prepared for the challenges ahead, especially with a demanding schedule of ten consecutive matchdays over the next block of fixtures awaiting the team.

The centre admitted the international break wasn’t ideal with the team’s successful recent run of results, but believes the enforced pause has ultimately strengthened the group.

“We would’ve liked to carry on with the momentum. It’s been tough these last four weeks, especially not having the reward of playing a game,” he said. “But we’ve definitely come out a better team because of it. Ryan Campbell (Head of S&C) had us running our legs off, and it’s been good for the wider group to get opportunities with the main team. Hopefully some of those boys can perform this weekend.”

Cardiff made an encouraging start to the URC season with four wins from five, but return to action this weekend as they head to Italy to face Zebre Rugby.

Despite the absence of match action, Millard says the squad have been putting in significant work behind the scenes to stay sharp and improve key areas.

“We’ve been working hard off the field. That’s all we can do really. We’ve been in the dojo with Gethin Jenkins (Defence Coach) working on our defence, and we’ve put a big emphasis on the contact area. We know our opponents are top of the league for turnovers, so we’ve prepared with that in mind.”

With ten consecutive fixtures approaching, squad depth will play a vital role throughout the busy schedule, with Millard insisting this will be a great opportunity to see more of the squad in action.

“Ten games in a row is tough on the body, so we’re going to have to use our wider squad to keep people fresh. Training has been really positive and I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully it gives some younger lads the chance to put their hands up.”

Millard, who himself has been through a number of knocks throughout the season, also provided reassurance following a recent injury that he picked up during the game against Munster earlier in October.

“I had scans and they basically said it was a ‘dead back,’ which I didn’t even know you could have, and a hip impingement as well. It was a bit of a bang, but I was fine and played the week after.”

Cardiff return to action this weekend, as they look to turn weeks of hard graft into a statement performance against Zebre Rugby.
