Hammer: We can't take foot off the throttle

20th December 2014

Mark Hammett admitted his Cardiff Blues must not 'take the foot off the throttle' after they defeated Scarlets 21-9 in a pulsating Guinness PRO12 derby.

Josh Navidi grabbed a try double and Gareth Anscombe finished with 11 points as Blues claimed a third win of the league campaign.

The result moved Blues closer to the race for sixth spot in the league as BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park enjoyed derby day triumph.

But Hammer was quick to insist Blues must now immediately turn their attention to a festive derby with Dragons on Boxing Day and backing up the Scarlets result.

He said: “There is no doubt about it that the win was critical from a competition perspective.

“We’ve got a very big picture for the future of this region. But in terms of the here and now that result was big for us. But whether you win or lose in sport, next week is always very close so we need to back it up.

“We’ve got another derby to look forward to now. We’ve got a big couple of weeks against the Dragons and we can’t take the foot off the throttle because, quite simply, we are not good enough yet.

“Every team knows that wins build confidence. To have that and to build on that is nice and now we have to go hard again.”
