Glasgow Warriors 22 Cardiff Blues 3

26th January 2007

A crisp night in Scotland saw the Blues wearing white and Nicky Robinson kicking off proceeding at Hughenden.

A huge up ‘n under by Nick Robinson saw the ball bobble out to Glasgow Warriors winger Colin Gregor who sprinted round the defence and threatened on the left hand side in to the Blues half. They were eventually awarded a penalty that Colin Gregor converted.

Minutes later a good move by the Blues broke down in midfield and saw Glasgow pick up the loose ball and move up to the Blues half once again. Cardiff Blues were penalised once more but this time Gregor was unsuccessful with his penalty attempt.

Having cleared a penalty to touch Glasgow failed to capitalise and lost the ball in the back of the line. Shellard collected the loose ball and strong running from Nicky Robinson saw Cardiff get in to the Glasgow twenty two. They tried to move the ball wide but a crunching tackle in midfield prevented the ball reaching the wing where Luveitasau was unmarked.

The Blues forwards were working well as a unit driving up field and taking men out and the backs tried to spread the ball but the Glasgow defence was strong. However, a lovely chip over the top by Nick Robinson beat the defence, he collected the ball but the pass out to Tom James just failed to go to hand when the young winger had a clear run in. The Blues had failed to score in the first half but it was an evenly balanced match.

Cardiff Blues got off to a bad start in the second half, falling off attackers with Scott Barrow breaking through two tacklers before passing to Fergus Thomson on his shoulder, he crossed for a try converted by Gregor.

Tom James did excellently collecting a loose kick then beating his man before chipping ahead. He worked his way in to the Glasgow twenty two but just knocked the ball on as he went to gather.

The Blues were awarded a penalty ten minutes in to the second half and Ben Blair stepped up to convert to put the Blues on the scoreboard.

Having just come on to the pitch on the hour mark in place of Rhys Shellard, Mark Lewis was sent to the sin bin which was a huge blow to the Blues. Glasgow kicked to the corner with the penalty and made the most of the man advantage when prop Kevin Tkachuk broke away from the ruck to speed over for a try in the corner. Glasgow came close again but just knocked the ball on in front of the tryline to give the Blues a lucky escape.

Glasgow however continued to threaten throughout the second half and drove the ball up the middle of the field. They eventually scored their third try when Sam Pinder crashed over near the posts with Gregor converting.
