Glasgow clash has ingredients to be a thriller - Williams

First Team News | 11th October 2019

Lloyd Williams says Saturday's clash at Scotstoun Stadium has all the ingredients to be a thriller, as Cardiff Blues and Glasgow Warriors look to respond from last weekend’s home defeats.

John Mulvihill’s men suffered a 19-11 defeat to Edinburgh at Cardiff Arms Park last weekend, but have an away victory under their belts this season after an entertaining bonus point win against Isuzu Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth on the opening weekend of action.

Meanwhile, Glasgow Warriors have suffered back-to-back defeats in their opening two games of Guinness PRO14 action, including a narrow loss to Scarlets at Scotstoun Stadium last weekend.

The Welsh international insists his side must concentrate on their own game against the Scottish outfit, but believes they have plenty of firepower to hurt the Warriors.

“The way they play the game and the way we like to play the game always makes it one to watch, and we’re hoping we can really impose our way of playing on them this weekend,” said the scrum half.

“They’re in a similar place to us. We were expected to win at home last week as were they, and every home game is important for any team.

“We’re expecting them to come out of the blocks, regardless of their result last weekend, so we’ll be looking to bring the game to Glasgow, impose ourselves and perform better this weekend.

“There’s certain things we’ve looked at that the Scarlets did well against them, especially in the first half.

“But ultimately we know what we can do to hurt them, which will give us confidence going into the game.

“I don’t think we’ve managed to perform to the best of our ability this season so far, but there’s no reason we can’t do that this weekend.

“We’re in a good place as a squad, and are just coming off the back of a bad performance, and we know if we can get tempo in our game we’ll be a dangerous team and one that’s tough to beat.”

Last weekend’s clash against Edinburgh was a significant milestone for Williams, as he over-took Gethin Jenkins into second place on Cardiff Blues’ all-time appearance-makers list.

However, despite his regional team-mate Tomos Williams currently being away with Wales at the World Cup, the scrum half typically insists the team comes ahead of any personal ambitions.

Williams said: “To be honest, I look at this period as one to win games, and then ultimately, if things go well on the field then you’ll benefit individually.

“I probably don’t look at it quite from a personal point of view in terms of selection, but if we perform well as a team then that will help each player as individuals.

“The international period as a whole is very important. The year Scarlets won it they managed to perform well during those months.

“They’re big opportunities for a team to capitalise on results.

“We’re not missing too many players but this is a chance to perform and try to pick up some results.”
