Children enjoyed an exciting day of rugby recently which included a visit from some of the country’s brightest rugby stars.

Pupils from twelve Merthyr Primary Schools took part in the Dragon Sport Tag Rugby Festival at Taff Bargoed Millennium Pitch in Treharris.

Susie Osborne, Dragon Sport Coordinator said, “Over 130 children participated. It was a fantastic day and the children had a very enjoyable introduction to the Tag version of rugby”

“The festival was partly organised by coaches from Treharris RFC who run Dragon Sport Sessions. We have another event for children in years three and four on the 24th November at Rhydycar. The day was such a success that we hope to run more festivals in the future.”

The festival was a joint initiative between Dragon Sport and the WRU to introduce the Tag initiative, a new venture for this season.

“ We aim to introduce the very youngest participants into rugby union using Tag rugby” said Nigel Way, WRU development officer for Merthyr Council. “ this version of the game increases invasion skills and develops fast, reactive ball handling skills.”

“We had four Cardiff Blues Academy Players as referees; Dwayne Goodfield, Bradley Davies, Johnny Edwards and David Walsh. We also had a guest visit from Welsh Internationals Jamie and Nicky Robinson from the Cardiff Blues Regional side.”
