Future Blues in Llanrumney

16th May 2007

The Future Blues Rugby Development scheme has been running in Cardiff & the Vale for many years and is supported by Cardiff Blues, local councils and private sectors such as BlackHorse.

Future Blues offer this scheme free of charge and involves qualified Community Coaches delivering Fun Tag Rugby sessions within Schools.

Recently Llanrumney and the East of Cardiff have benefited from this scheme with rugby coaching sessions being delivered in a number of local Primary schools. St Cadoc’s, Brynhafod, Glan Yr Afon, Trowbridge Jnr, Oakfield, Willowbrook, Meadowlane and St John’s have all received 4 weeks of rugby coaching in the past few months with 32 1hr coaching sessions being delivered and over 450 local children being engaged in the sport.

Now that the sessions have come to an end the local schools have been invited to take part in 2 special festivals. The 1st being the Llanrumney community festival on July 4th at Eastern Leisure Centre, the children will have a chance to compete against other local schools in Tag rugby matches. The emphasis on the Festival being ‘Fun and Inclusive’ and focusing on the community. Through our links with The Llanrumney Community Forum we are aiming to get more children and young adults within the community active in sport. Part of the programme after the festival is to then extend fun tag rugby sessions in the evenings at Eastern Leisure Centre to try and encourage sport out of school times. Members from local rugby clubs will be invited to attend to have the chance to promote their club and recruit more players.
The 2nd festival is on July 16th & 17th held at Cardiff Arms Park. Again the emphasis on being ‘Fun & Inclusive’ and giving the children the chance to play on the ‘Hallowed Turf’

Congratulations must go to the boys listed below who were part of the Cardiff Schools U11 district squad.

Matthew Jones – Brynhafod
Tyler Mahoney – St Cadocs
Callum MacDonald – Trowbridge Jnr
Ciaran Lewis – Trowbridge Jnr
Lewis Kirk – Trowbridge Jnr
Shane Young – Willowbrook
Joshua Thomas – Willowbrook

This year the squad had an outstanding season, progressing through the rounds of the DC Thomas Cup and winning the final against Swansea 12 - 5. The final was played at the Millennium stadium as a curtain raiser to the Konica Minolta Cup.
