Evans pleased with Cardiff Blues' clinical edge in Kings victory

First Team News | 29th September 2019

Jarrod Evans was pleased with Cardiff Blues’ clinical edge as they battled back to claim a bonus-point victory over Southern Kings.

The Blues trailed 13-5 following a frustrating first half in their Guinness PRO14 opener but they added four second-half tries to Olly Robinson’s early score.

Liam Belcher, Matthew Morgan, Kristian Dacey and Harri Millard also crossed and they clung on to ensure a maximum-points haul from the trip to South Africa.

Evans said: “It’s pleasing to take the five points, we have put a big focus on our away form this season and that’s going to be crucial.

“We didn’t get off to the best of starts and the Kings came out firing, which we knew they would.

“The biggest thing was our discipline, the amount of penalties, easy penalties giving them decent territory into the game. But once we fixed that and made a few changes at half-time, we were pretty comfortable after that apart from the bit at the end.

“We dealt with them a little bit better in the second-half and with the ball we just went a bit more multi-phase and a bit more patient. Instead of going three or four phases, we were going six, seven, eight. These boys get quite tired and it paid off in the end.

“One of the pleasing things was how clinical we were inside their 22 and that was our biggest work on from last season. Our percentages coming away from the 22 wasn’t great but we did that pretty well tonight. We worked our tries well and the backs chose their moments well.”

Wales’ Capital Region return to the Arms Park on Saturday when they host Edinburgh and Evans is relishing the opportunity to play in front of a home crowd once more.

He added: “I’m looking forward to getting back to the Arms Park, it’s a good place for us to play. The boys really thrive with the crowd and atmosphere there.

“Personally, it will be nice to get back out there as well, it was my first hit out tonight and I’m looking forward to getting back there and having a hit out on that track.”
