Both Cardiff U16s squads were in action on Tuesday evening and produced a pair of outstanding performances in victories over regional rivals. Cardiff North travelled to Ystrad Mynach where they overcame Dragons Black 47-24, while Cardiff South put in a commanding display at Cardiff Arms Park to defeat Ospreys East 45-26.
Cardiff North U16s 47-24 Dragons Black U16s
Despite traveling away up to Ystrad Mynach, Cardiff North wasted no time in asserting themselves, striking from the kick-off with a superb length-of-the-field try finished by Jet Jenkins, converted by Bowen Thomas. Dragons Black responded with a well-worked try of their own, but Cardiff soon took control of the game overall.
Will Creed-King powered over from close range before a flowing team move was finished by Oliver Davies, with Thomas adding both conversions to extend the lead. Dragons Black remained stubborn opponents and closed the gap to 19-12, but Cardiff finished the half strongly. A sublime pass from Thomas released Will Mackie in the corner to give the visitors a 26-12 advantage at the break.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Cardiff North again coming out of the blocks quickly. Davies and Creed-King both crossed for their second tries of the night, converted by the ever-reliable Thomas, as the blue & blacks stretched their lead. Dragons Black showed real resilience again to claim another deserved score, but despite a more frantic final quarter with multiple changes, Cardiff maintained their attacking edge.
A well-constructed passage of interplay sent James Mitchell over under the posts before Dragons Black added a late consolation, leaving Cardiff North worthy 47-24 winners.
Cardiff South U16s 45-26 Ospreys East U16s
Cardiff South delivered a strong all-round performance to see off Ospreys East at the Arms Park, blending physical dominance with composed finishing.
The hosts made an immediate impact, opening the scoring through Cale Thatcher-Hodge, whose powerful carry and finish set the tone. Cardiff South quickly built momentum, winning the collision area and playing with tempo and purpose.
Much of the control came through an excellent display from Jake Barclay, who impressed with both his kicking game and distribution. Barclay managed territory superbly, brought others into play effectively and added five conversions from the tee to ensure Cardiff capitalised on their attacking pressure.
In midfield, Noah Johnson was influential throughout, combining sharp passing with an effective running game. Johnson crossed for a well-taken try of his own and delivered two outstanding 50:22 kicks, repeatedly turning pressure into attacking opportunities and underlining Cardiff South’s tactical edge.
The scoreboard reflected Cardiff South’s attacking depth, with tries also coming from Ieuan Taylor, who finished two through intelligent support play, as well as Harri Dobbs, Maxime Hobrough and James Dyas Szulik, as the hosts consistently found ways to breach the Ospreys East defence.
Ospreys East showed attacking intent to register 26 points, but Cardiff South’s ability to control key moments and convert pressure into points proved decisive in an entertaining Arms Park encounter.
