Cardiff to face Barbarian FC in sesquicentennial season

Cardiff Rugby will celebrate their Sesquicentennial Season with a special anniversary fixture against Barbarian FC at the culmination of the 2026-27 season.

The Blue & Blacks have a long and illustrious history with the famous invitational club, dating back to 1891.

With traditional Easter Saturday encounters the highlight of a bygone era, the two iconic club have faced each other 112 times with the Blue & Blacks winning 71.

And they will renew that friendship and rivalry on Friday, June 4, 2027 (19:30) in a special fixture to celebrate Cardiff’s 150th anniversary.

An iconic fixture

Cardiff Rugby Honorary President, Sir Gareth Edwards, who played 11 times for the Barbarians, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to revive one of the game’s most iconic fixtures as the club celebrates its sesquicentennial season.

“There is so much shared history between the teams, while Penarth remains the Baa-Baas spiritual home.

“It offers us the perfect opportunity to mark our 150th anniversary at the Arms Park with our supporters but also the chance to capture the hearts and minds of new generations just like the old Easter tours.

“We are very grateful to the Barbarians for accepting the invitation and are looking forward to what will undoubtedly be a fantastic occasion.”

It will be the first time Cardiff have faced the Baa-Baas since an enthralling 49-43 victory in 1996 and legendary centre, John Spencer, who has served as the club’s president since 2019, is thrilled to renew a fixture steeped in history.

A shared philosophy for innovation, entertainment and enjoyment

Spencer said: “Barbarian F.C. are absolutely delighted to accept the invitation of Cardiff for this fixture in their very special 150th anniversary season.

“These are two clubs steeped in history, with a shared philosophy for innovation, entertainment and enjoyment, while so many greats of the game have pulled on both the famous blue and black, and black and white hoops.

“So many of my fondest memories in the game are the old Easter tours of Wales and fixtures against Cardiff on the Saturday.

“It is now a different era and the game has changed but it is brilliant to see this fixture brought back to the Arms Park and I have no doubt it will provide a fitting finale to a season of celebrations.

“We look forward to renewing that great rivalry and friendship in June next year and congratulate Cardiff on reaching this milestone.”

The fixture is included in all 2026-27 Season Membership packages, while individual match tickets are available now – priced from £30 for adults and £10 for juniors during the Early Bird window!
