Corniel van Zyl praised the character, effort and emerging talent within the squad following a spirited performance against Stade Français, describing the match as an important step forward for the group.

While the result ultimately went the way of the hosts, Corniel highlighted the many positives taken from a determined display in the French capital.

“It was tough in the end to take, but there was a lot to be proud of,” he said. “In the first half we were really in the fight, and our defence in particular was very pleasing.”

It was a significant afternoon for Cardiff’s wider squad, with three debutants earning their first appearances and winger Iwan Stephens making a welcome return to action. This is something that Van Zyl highlighted as an important marker in the club’s long-term development.

“It’s big for the future of the club. These boys are getting exposure at this level, and that’s invaluable. It’s not just about learning – it’s about taking today’s experience into the future and continuing to grow.”

The composure shown by the younger players reflects the strength emerging within Cardiff’s pathway and the confidence the coaching team has in its depth.

Attention now turns to next week’s European clash with Ulster, a side Cardiff know well and a challenge van Zyl believes the squad will embrace.

“It’s still a fresh competition, but we’re more familiar with Ulster than we were with Stade,” he said. “We’ve seen the form they’re in, so we know it’ll be another tough match – but we’ll be ready.”

“If we keep bringing the same effort and continue building, we’ll give ourselves every chance.”
