Following a recent 36 0 win over old rivals Pontypool and a successful team building weekend at Ogmore by Sea, the Cardiff teams took the field in confident mood.
The B squad overwhelmed their opponents 60 0 with excellent displays by backs Lewis Kirk and Calum MacDonald (both Trowbridge), Sebastian Davies (Melin Gryffydd), and Andrew Corfield (Llandaff City). They were allowed to run riot against Rhymney Valley due to the ferocious rucking of the Cardiff pack led by Conor Vaughan (Coed y Gof), Jacob Roberts (Pentyrch), Max Wilson (Coryton) and Man of the Match Muntassa Al Habsi (Coed Glas). Final Score 60 -0
Eyes soon turned to the A team fixture where DC Thomas Cup holders Cardiff took the field against a very determined and well drilled Rhymney outfit. Two early interceptions almost saw Cardiff go two tries to nil down, but exceptional defence by Jordan Viggers (Rumney) and Richard Singer (Rhiwbina) kept the score line at 0 0. The Cardiff XV rallied and from a tap penalty, skipper Mathew Marley (Creigiau) drew the defence and floated a ball wide to Ben Crabbe (Llanishen Fach) to score from 60 yards. The Cardiff pack began to dominate, allowing the backs to benefit from quick ruck ball. The flood gates opened and superb individual skills by Callum Sheedy (St Albans), William Hayward (Pentyrch) and Lewis Pearce (Oakfield) saw the team run in a further five unanswered tries. Final Score 42 – 0
