Cardiff ran in 11 tries as they recorded a commanding victory in this opening pre-season fixture at the Arms Park.
Try machine centre Harri Millard, scrum-half Ellis Bevan and full-back Tom Bowen all crossed twice as the hosts built a 47-5 interval lead against newly promoted English Championship side Richmond.
Fly-half Ioan Lloyd, a summer signing from the Scarlets, slotted seven of his eight conversions to finish with a 14 point haul from an assured performance in front of an appreciative 3,698 crowd.
In all, Cardiff gave debuts to eight new recruits with try scoring No 8 Taine Basham, lock George Nott and props Sam Wainwright and Ioan Emanuel also starting, while tighthead Javan Sebastian, scrum-half Ieuan Davies and second row Tom Cottle took their bows off the bench.
On his first outing since suffering a serious ankle injury on Wales duty last November, winger Grady lost no time in announcing his return as he paved the way for the hosts’ opening score inside 30 seconds.
Off an attack from deep, he burst down the right touchline ahead of Millard carrying on from where he left off last season when he won the award as the URC’s top try scorer.
Loosehead Ioan Emanuel, who is on a season-long loan from Bath, then marked his debut by forcing his way from close range ahead of Richmond responding with a lineout drive try from hooker Will Goffey.
For the remainder of the half, it was largely one way traffic as the tries came on a regular basis for the hosts with Millard, Bevan and Bowen going over twice.
Bevan threw an outrageous dummy to stroll in for his first, while powerful young wing Elijah Evans had a big hand in the build-up to a couple of touchdowns.
He broke a tackle out on the left before sending Bowen racing away and gave another inside scoring pass for Millard’s second.
Wearing No 13, the versatile Millard also showed he can create for others, delivering a lovely delayed offload for Bowen to bring up his double.
Cardiff made seven changes at the break, with Scottish international prop Javan Sebastian among the players to enter the fray along with centre Steffan Emanuel, the brother of Ioan.
They immediately extended their advantage when all-action Wales back rower Taine Basham capped his debut by surging over for a try.
But then, on 51 minutes, came a concerning sight as Mason Grady left the field with his left arm in a sling fashioned out of his jersey.
As the game moved into the final quarter, there was a try for replacement second-row Tom Cottle ahead of wing Elijah Evans also departing with his arm in a jersey-sling, while new lock George Nott had limped off.
In the closing minutes, there were further touchdowns from subs Callum Sheedy and Daf Hughes, along with a consolation effort from Richmond wing Sam Smith.
