Cardiff quartet retain Wales under-20 starting spots

International | 23rd February 2022

A quartet of Cardiff youngsters have retained their starting spots as Wales under-20 travel to Doncaster on Friday to take on England in the third round of Six Nations Championship fixtures (KO 7.00pm).

Head coach Byron Hayward has made a total of four changes to his side, with Blue and Blacks hooker Efan Daniel ruled out of the clash following a leg injury suffered against Scotland last time out.

Captain Alex Mann and openside Ethan Fackrell once again line-up in the back row, and are joined in the pack by academy team-mate, Rhys Barratt, who keeps hold of the number one jersey.

There is a positional switch for Cameron Winnett, who lines up on the wing as Ospreys' Iestyn Hopkins makes his debut at full back.

Former Cardiff age grade hooker, Morgan Vanness - now of Ealing Trailfinders - replaces the injured Daniel at hooker while Morgan Lloyd of Dragons is drafted into the number nine jersey.

Meanwhile, prop Nathan Evans returns to the matchday squad, taking his place on the bench alongside Cardiff Met's Joe Cowell.

Wales head to Castle Park on the back of victory over Scotland at Parc Eirias but will be fully aware of an England side looking to bounce back after they suffered defeat to Italy in the last round.

Head coach Hayward said: “They’ll be feeling like what we were after the Ireland game. You’re going back home coming off the back of a defeat and you certainly want to put the score right and redress the balance.

“They are going to be physical and up for it but we hope we have picked a team prepared for that physical battle and stay in the fight and I think if we are in the game in the last 20 minutes anything could happen.

The former Wales international outside half also expressed his disappointment after losing Daniel and lock Ryan Woodman: “Efan is going to be a top class professional player and I’d say a full international no doubt. Ryan’s first game at U20 level as a 17-year-old - he had an exceptional debut so to lose both is a blow.

“Joe [Peard] was very unhappy with his performance in the game against Ireland so the opportunity comes for him to redeem himself while the two nines will both be playing but maybe with different roles this time.

“With more experience in terms of age, Morgan [Lloyd] was a real calming influence when he came on against Scotland with three try assists. His decision making was very good, he was calm, and his game management was really good, so he gets a first start.

“The coaches agreed unanimously Iestyn [Hopkins] deserved a start. He has earned the jersey as he has been such a positive influence in training. He has trained exceptionally well and gone away and played for Swansea in the Premiership and even dropped down to Dunvant last week to get game time. He has earned the jersey purely by his attitude.”
