Cardiff Rugby will once again be represented at international level, with 10 academy players being named in the Wales U18 men’s squad for the upcoming Six Nations Festival in Vichy, France.
Head coach Richie Pugh have selected a group of 26 players for the tournament, with Cardiff Rugby’s Alfie Prygodzicz captaining the side, while fellow academy products Bryan Kamanga, Isaac Jones, Harri Lewis, Will Watkins, George Thomas, Harvey Bryant, Owen Lewis, Harry Kinsey and Will Adams have also included. The selection underlines the strength of Cardiff Rugby’s pathway system.
Prygodzicz, who featured in last year’s unbeaten campaign, returns as one of only two players with prior Six Nations Festival experience and will lead the squad in France.
Speaking after confirming his squad, Pugh highlighted both the opportunity and challenge facing this young group.
“This is quite a young group, and several boys will gain huge experience for next year while competing this year,” said Pugh.
“We’re really excited about the squad we have. With three games in just 10 days, managing the quick turnarounds will be crucial. The physical and mental demands on the boys will challenge us as a group, which is why the Six Nations festival is such an important development opportunity.”
Wales head into the tournament looking to build on last year’s impressive clean sweep, where they recorded victories over Ireland, Georgia and Italy. However, Pugh is under no illusions about the task ahead.
“We can take confidence from last year’s success and the three wins, but this is a new group, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how they compete against the best in Europe,” he added.
“Obviously, the warm-up games haven’t gone our way in terms of results, but we were competitive for long periods, particularly against Ireland. We switched off for two periods in both games and got punished for it.
“These are lessons the boys must learn quickly and build on before we face Scotland next week.”
The festival will take place at Stade Municipal Louis Darragon in Vichy, with Wales opening their campaign against Scotland on April 3, before facing hosts France on April 7 and concluding against Spain on April 11.
