Cardiff discover Challenge Cup destiny as pool stage draw is completed

First Team News | 28th June 2022

Cardiff Rugby will face Newcastle Falcons and CA Brive in the 2022/23 Challenge Cup pool stage.

The Blue and Blacks discovered their pool stage opponents in this afternoon’s draw, as the road to Dublin begins.

Dai Young’s side will be targeting a third Challenge Cup trophy, having also lifted silverware in 2010 and 2018.

On their way to success in 2010, Cardiff did come up against Newcastle Falcons in the quarter final stage, coming out on top with a 55-22 win.

The last time they met the Kingston Park outfit was in December 2020, where Tomos Williams inspired the Blue and Blacks to victory in the Challenge Cup pool stage.

Cardiff also have European history with Brive, with the most notable encounter coming in the 1997 Heineken Cup semi final. The hosts were the victors at the snowy Stadium Muncipal, where Jonathan Humphreys was controversially sent off.

European action will get underway in December, with Cardiff placed in Pool A - which also includes the likes of Bristol Bears, Toulon, Glasgow Warriors, Bath Rugby and Perpignan.

Tickets for the home European pool stage matches are included in 2022/23 Season Memberships packages. For more information, please click HERE

Pool stage games will take place on the weekends of December 10, December 17, January 14 and January 21, with exact kick off times to be confirmed in due course.

The round of 16 takes place on the weekend of April 1, with the quarter-finals on the weekend of April 8, the semi-finals on the weekend of April 29 and the final on Friday May 19 at Dublin's Aviva Stadium.
