Cardiff Blues South U18 29 Scarlets U18 39

24th January 2018

Cardiff Blues South U18 claimed a try-scoring bonus point against Scarlets at Cardiff Arms Park on Tuesday, but it was not enough to stop the visitors from lifting the 2017/18 WRU Regional Age Grade Championship title.

The West Wales outfit maintained their 100 per cent record for the campaign, making it eight bonus point victories from eight fixtures, and clinched the title with two games remaining.

It took 11 minutes for Paul Fisher's side to open the scoring. Wing Alex Varney made yards on the left hand side, and found support on his inside from Osian Knott.

The Cardiff Blues South defence stopped the centre in his tracks, but Varney was on hand to follow up and take an offload to run in for his first try of the evening.

Scarlets made it a quickfire double as live-wire scrum half, Dafydd Land, sliced open the home defence, before feeding captain Gethin Davies through to extend the lead to 12-0.

With 26 minutes on the clock. Gareth Nicholas' side struck back in stunning fashion. A line-out on the halfway line was secured and Joe Williams spread the ball out wide.

A perfectly timed Jay Jones pass released flanker James Bartlett, who broke the line and progressed into the visitors' 22. Williams was in support, and the scrum half offloaded to Dylan Rigby, who was taken down short, but found Max Cunnington, who completed a fine team score.

James Beetham converted before closing the visitors' lead with a penalty.

However, Cardiff Blues South were dealt a blow on the verge of half-time, as Varney escaped two tackle down the left wing to run in from inside his own half, and make it 10-17 at the interval.

Varney completed his hat-trick early in the second half to secure a bonus point and Dean James added a fifth try after 55 minutes.

Cardiff Blues South refused to give up and two short-range line-outs saw Lewis Jameson and Owen Harvey cross the whitewash.

An Owen Jones try gave Scarlets further breathing space but replacement Drew Harvey squeezed in at the corner at the death to salvage a try-scoring bonus point for his side.
