Cardiff Blues boosted by Grand Slam stars for Scarlets thriller

First Team News | 19th March 2019

John Mulvihill is relishing a Guinness PRO14 thriller against the Scarlets after being boosted by the availability of seven Wales internationals.

After clinching a Guinness Six Nations Grand Slam, the likes of Gareth Anscombe, Josh Navidi and Dillon Lewis are all available for the Arms Park derby on Friday night.

Mulvihill was delighted with their form in a red jersey and believes they can make a major contribution back in blue.

He said: “It’s really good to see how they’ve progressed over the last couple of months and to get that victory last weekend. To have them back in the building and fit is brilliant, and all of them have come through and are raring to go this weekend.

“What Gareth Anscombe and Josh Navidi did in the last game for 80 minutes and Dillon Lewis coming on for the last part was awesome for them individually. Certainly, Gareth has put a lot of nay-sayers to bed with his performance.

“We had seven in the squad and all seven will take part on Friday night. We will get parts out of them this weekend, which will hopefully put us in good stead to be at the right end on 80.”

Cardiff Blues battled to a comprehensive 34-5 victory over the Scarlets earlier this season and completing a double would keep them firmly in the play-off hunt.

On the back of Wales’ Grand Slam and their own impressive form tickets have been flying out of the Arms Park and Mulvihill expects a packed house.

Mulvihill added: “We set out our stall at the start of the season to be the best team in Wales and if we want to do that then we have to beat these guys again.

“There’s going to be a massive crowd and we’ve only got a few thousand left to sell out Cardiff Arms Park. If you haven’t got tickets, then you have to get there because this could be an absolute cracker.

“The weather is looking good and the Scarlets have real intent. They are one of the teams that use the ball really well, when the game opens up, we use it really well so it could be a real end-to-end thriller and I hope it will be a real showcase for the regional game.”
