Boss aiming to build cup momentum

2nd November 2013

Blues' boss Phil Davies admitted it is vital his side keep the winning habit going as Cardiff Blues now switch attention to the LV=Cup campaign.

Blues secured a hard-fought RaboDirect PRO12 victory over Benetton Treviso in horrendous conditions at the Arms Park.

Director of Rugby Davies was full of pride for the manner in which his much changed Blues, without nine players on international duty with Wales, overcame an Italian side who were close to full strength.

However, he acknowledged there was no time to sit back and relax as Blues now prepare to face Worcester Warriors next Friday in the LV=Cup.

Davies said: “We are getting better. We are not where we want to be, but we are gaining momentum, moving forward and growing as a group through good experiences and tough ones.

“We are going to try and balance selection as much as we can these next few weeks. We need to give certain boys up front a recovery and refresh. They will probably be on the bench as opposed to starting.

“We will mix and match the team a little but want to keep winning. I am mindful of who has played so many minutes so we have got to manage that to keep freshness in the group for when we return to the RaboDirect PRO12 and the Heineken Cup.

“It was important to finish this block of games with a win,” he added. “The players are in the dressing room and they are smiling, laughing and joking. That’s great and, as a coach, that is why I do the job for.

“There was lots to admire - also lots that we could do better, of course. But the second half, the way we defended was outstanding, and a great credit to them all.

“Many players were very good. Josh Navidi was outstanding, absolutely outstanding.

“Dan Fish played well and did what he is capable of. He is dangerous and set up the second try with a great catch when the ball was all over the shop in the wind.

“He’s a talent and it’s a shame he had to come off with a dead leg. Hopefully that’s not too bad.

“As a unit we were very cohesive, maybe more so without the ball today, so I am proud as it was a good, tough performance.”
