bmibaby, the airline with tiny fares , is celebrating after winning its first major award, “Best UK Low Cost Airline,” in the prestigious Daily Telegraph Travel Awards.

The awards were held last night (Monday 6 October) at the Renaissance Chancery Court Hotel, in London.

Despite being operational for just 19 months, the airline scooped the top award beating off competition from other, more established UK low cost airlines.

Tony Davis, managing director of bmibaby, said:
“We’re obviously thrilled to be an award winning airline at such a young age, the fact that our first major award is voted for by the public is a real vote of confidence and shows what an impact we’ve had on low cost travel in less than two years. bmibaby has grown fast and we’re continuing to grow with our fourth UK base at Teesside opening in a few weeks time. Whilst we are sure that this won’t be the last award that we’ll win it will always be one we’ll remember as it’s our first. I’d personally like to thank everyone who took the time to vote and to thank our passengers who have helped to make us as successful as we are in such a short space of time.”

bmibaby is currently serving 38 routes throughout Europe from three UK bases at East Midlands, Cardiff and Manchester (all three airports voted in the top ten airports in the world, in the Daily Telegraph Travel Awards), and from 26 October, will also be flying from Teesside Airport in the North East of England.

The airline, established in March 2002, has its head office based at East Midlands Airport and employs almost five hundred staff in the UK.
