Amos set for Cardiff Blues debut as Leicester visit Welsh capital

First Team News | 22nd November 2019

Hallam Amos will make his Cardiff Blues debut as John Mulvihill makes nine changes for the blockbuster Challenge Cup clash against Leicester Tigers at Cardiff Arms Park.

Wales’ Capital Region kicked off their campaign with a bonus point win at Calvisano last week, and will meet the Tigers for the first time in European competition since the infamous Heineken Cup semi final penalty shoot-out in 2009.

22-times capped Amos joined the Blues from rivals Dragons over the summer, and represented Wales as they reached the semi final of the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

The 25-year-old will line up at full back, and is joined by the returning Owen Lane and Aled Summerhill in a new-look back three.

Skipper Lloyd Williams returns at scrum half, while Jarrod Evans retains his place in the number 10 jersey alongside centre partnership Willis Halaholo and Rey Lee-Lo.

Corey Domachowski, Liam Belcher and Scott Andrews pack down in the front row, with Seb Davies returning to lock alongside fellow international Josh Turnbull.

New Wales call-up, Shane Lewis-Hughes, is joined by Will Boyde and Nick Williams in the back row.

Head coach Mulvihill said: “We did ourselves a favour by picking up five points away from home last week.

“If we can follow that with a win, we can re-assess and look back at the PRO14 and make sure we take the momentum out of this week’s games into that competition.

“Depending on how much importance the French team place on the Challenge Cup, this game could go a long way to figuring out who finishes as the top two in the pool.

“It’s a home fixture for us, and we need to win it, but I’m sure Leicester will be looking to come down, get the points and set themselves up nicely for the rest of the competition.

“As a squad, we’re really looking forward to a European night at the Arms Park. We have a lot of history in Europe against Leicester and hopefully we will have a packed out crowd who will create a memorable atmosphere in the Welsh capital.”

Jason Tovey returns from injury to take his place on the bench, alongside the in-form Matthew Morgan and last week’s try-scorer, James Botham.

Both sides are locked on five points in Pool 5, after Geordan Murphy’s side kicked off their Challenge Cup campaign with a bonus point win over Paul Tito’s Pau at Welford Road last week, with Welsh international Jonah Holmes touching down for four tries.
