Alun Lawrence returns to Cardiff

First Team News | 17th November 2023

Alun Lawrence has returned to Cardiff Rugby on a short-term contract.

The versatile back-row forward came through the system at Cardiff and made 23 appearances in Blue and Black.

He left the club to join Jersey Reds in January 2022, and stayed on at the English club, helping them to the 2022-2023 Championship title.

However, following the sad demise of Jersey, Lawrence has agreed a return to his home club.

Cardiff head coach Matt Sherratt said: “Back-row is a really combative position where we have already seen a number of injuries so it is great to bring Alun back to give us a bit more depth.

“He took a good opportunity to go to Jersey and helped them to the Championship title in a season in which he was the stand out back-rower in the competition.

“He is a great professional and returns to Cardiff a more experienced player.”

Lawrence provides immediate cover for the likes of Taulupe Faletau and James Botham, who are currently injured at the Arms Park.

He said: “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to return to my home club after an amazing experience in Jersey which unfortunately came to a sudden end.

“It’s great to be back and seeing so many familiar faces and good friends.

“I hope to contribute positively to the group and repay the faith to Cardiff Rugby.”
