Adam first played Premiership rugby for Cardiff in 2003-04 when he also captained the successful Wales under-19 team. By the end of that season he had made 13 appearances for the Blue & Blacks. A member of the Blues Academy, Adam transferred to Pontypridd at the start of the following season and played as a replacement in the team that won the Konica Minolta Cup Final in May 2006. In November 2006 he rejoined Cardiff and resumed his Blue & Black career when he shared in the 31-19 victory over Maesteg on 2 December. Adam made his Blues debut in the match against Borders in January 2007.
